Beijing, Oct. 2, (dpa/GNA) - The officialnewspaper of China's ruling Communist Party backs Hong Kong's embattled leaderagainst calls to resign from thousands of pro-democracy protesters.

"The central government has fullconfidence in Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, and is completely satisfied withhis work," the People's Daily said in a front-page editorial.

Student leaders of the Hong Kong protestsare threatening to blockade government offices if Leung fails to resign byThursday.

In a series of recent commentaries, statemedia have called the protests illegal and insisted that elections for HongKong's next leader in 2017 must be conducted under existing rules requiringcandidates to be approved by a Beijing-backed committee.
