Freemasons of the District Grand Lodge of Ghana across the country at the weekend trooped to the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis for their Half-Yearly Communication programme at the plush Atlantic Hotel in Takoradi in the Western Region.

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization that traces its origin to the local fraternities of stonemasons, which from the end of the 14 th century regulated the qualifications of masons and their interaction with authorities and clients.

Members of the District Grand Lodge, which comprises 58 Lodges spread across the country, used the programme to take stock of what they had done so far in the year and also to meet members of the group from all over the country.

Fundamental Principles
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE , George Ekow Mill, Deputy District Grand Master of Freemasons, District Grand Lodge of Ghana English Constitution, explained that Freemasonry is basically based on brotherly love, belief and truth.

'Freemason is a fraternal association of men who believe in moral uprightness and seek spiritual values', he stressed.

He indicated that charity is the bedrock of the institution and that the members try as much as possible to assist and be useful to the society and not only the members adding, 'We have been engaging in masonic activities for long.

'We renovate schools, assist hospitals to acquire equipment. We also give scholarships to needy students', he added.

Donation
The Freemasons took advantage of their presence in the twin-city of Sekondi-Takoradi to donate three Patient Monitors worth GH¢18,000.00 to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

George Ekow Mill explained that the monitors could be used for the very ill, the unconscious and the bed-ridden patients and that they would be used in special wards at the health facility.

Appreciation
Receiving the monitors on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Paul Ntodi, Medical Director of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, commended the Freemasons for their charitable works, particularly in the health sector.

He revealed that the items were precious and needed at the hospital.

He said even though the hospital already had some patients' monitors, they were not adequate.

Other Needs
Dr. Ntodi indicated that the hospital had other needs and appealed to the Freemasons to come to the aid of the health facility.

He pointed out that the hospital had not seen any major rehabilitation work since it was established so many years ago.

He appealed to the Freemasons in Sekondi to try and adopt one of the wards for rehabilitation.

He noted that the hospital might also need oxygen concentrators to help improve the supply of the gas to patients.

He also appealed to the Freemasons to help complete a care givers' hostel which was started by the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, but had stalled because of lack of funding.
