Taiwan's President Tells Al Jazeera: We Do Not Accept One Country, Two Systems
29.09.2014 LISTEN

• Taiwanese President rejects 'one country, two systems' proposed with China

• Expresses concerns on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong

In an exclusive interview with Talk to Al Jazeera, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou rejected China's attempt to enforce the 'one country, two systems' rule on Taiwan.

Responding to the 'one country, two systems' formula proposed by China's Xi Jinping recently, Ma tells Al Jazeera's Steve Chao: "In the early 1980's the 'one country, two systems' concept was created for Taiwan, not for Hong Kong.

But Taiwan has sent a clear message that we do not accept the concept. If the system is good, then we believe it should be 'one country, one system.'"

Ma also commented on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, saying: "Taiwan is the only place in China where we are able to practice democracy .... We are worried about the developments in Hong Kong. We are very concerned about how it will affect Hong Kong's future as well as China's international image... Hong Kong has already become a global financial centre. Any political turbulence will have significant implications to its economic development."
