She lauded Philip Avent for instituting the competition, saying it would help mothers engage with the company on the occasion of its 30 th anniversary.

Mrs Selormey said: 'I am very happy to be a part of this celebration as Philips Avent has been part of my life for four years, during which I have given birth to three boys.

'I have used their products with all my children and it is great that they are implementing a campaign like this in Ghana which engages with mums and includes them as part of this year's milestone celebration.'

A promotion that will see customers get a free Philips Avent soother each time they spend GH₵100 at the company's retail outlets was also announced.

Speaking at the event, Dr Maame Yaa Nyarko, a Paediatrician at the Princess Marie Loiuse Children's Hospital, underscored the need for mothers to feed their babies breast milk only for the first six months.

According to Dr Nyarko, no solid food, water or formula should be given to babies for at least the first six months.

This, she said, will help reduce obesity in children and provide them with essential and adequate nutrients at the right temperature.  She added that it will also help to improve the intelligence of the children and protect them against diseases.

Dr Nyarko also called for 'breast feeding centres' to be set up at Churches, supermarkets, workplaces and other public places to enable babies enjoy 'six months exclusive breastfeeding'.
