Fulani Herdsmen Invade Nkoranza

Major (Rtd) Dereck Oduro
FARMERS IN some communities in the Nkoranza North District of the Brong-Ahafo Region have abandoned their farms and bolted following an invasion by Fulani herdsmen of those areas.

DAILY GUIDE  has gathered that estimated 500 herdsmen from Northern Nigeria and Burkina Faso – with about 5,000 cows – hadstormed the affected communities and had been terrorizing local farmers in the district.

The worst hit communities are Dinkra, Kunsu, Afakwasi, Tanko, Betoda, Pado, Asuogya and Benfrano.

Farmers at Dinkra told  DAILY GUIDE  that the Fulani herdsmen mostly operate in the night as they send their cattle to graze in their farms.

According to the farmers, the cattle had destroyed their farm produce such as yam, maize and cowpea.

One farmer, Thomas Dapare, who is a settler from Wa, said during harvesting of their produce, farmers have to guard their farms in the night to avoid the Fulani herdsmen invading them with their cattle.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Major (Rtd) Dereck Oduro, has also expressed grave concern about the presence of the alien herdsmen in the area.

The MP confirmed to  DAILY GUIDE  that the Fulani herdsmen, who had brought their wives and children along with them, had pitched camps in the bushes around the Dinkra area, and causing great havoc to farms of local farmers.

According to the MP, he personally reported the case to the National Security and the government, sometime back and led some soldiers to the area in 'Operation Cow Leg' to flush out the herdsmen.

He however, said the herdsmen had returned to the area again with the connivance of some selfish chiefs who he claimed, take some stipends from the Fulani.

The Nkoranza North MP stated that the presence of the herdsmen in the district was not only endangering the lives of local farmers, but also a threat to national security. He told this paper that the herdsmen also trade in arms.

Major (Rtd) Dereck Oduro therefore called on the National Security to step in as quickly as possible and flush out the alien herdsmen to avoid any major future security problem in the district and the nation as a whole.
