The failure of Ghana's leaders to envision problems and plan for the future is destroying the legacy of Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, a youth leader has said.

Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Monday, a youth leader, Esther Essinam said, “ineptitude is destroying Kwame Nkrumah's legacy”.

Ghana is celebrating Founder's Day, a public holiday to remember independence hero  Kwame Nkrumah's born on  September 21 ,  1909.

The day will be marked with lectures, symposiums and other programmes to highlight his achievements and vision.

Kwame Nkrumah became an international symbol of freedom, as the leader of the first black African country to shake off the chains of colonial rule. In 2000, BBC Africa Service listeners voted him the African of the Millennium.

Credited with massive infrastructural development and economic growth, many Ghanaians believe Ghana saw it better days Nkrumah's leadership.

Weighing in on the celebration of the day and on Nkrumah's achievements, Essinam dismissed the excuse that Kwame Nkrumah did well because he had only 6 million Ghanaians to lead at 6 March 1957 –Independence Day, while recent leaders are having to grapple with a far larger population.

She said although Ghana had a small population, Kwame Nkrumah initiated the construction of the Tema Motorway to serve not only that generation but future ones.

She conceded that although Ghana has the right plans, putting the “wrong” people in power because “you need to say thank you” only goes to undermine the implementation of such plans.

Suggesting remedies, she said ordinary people can bring change if Ghanaians learn to do basic things such as “eating our own food” and “writing in our own language”.
