Symposium held in honour of late Kofi Awoonor

Accra, Sept. 20, GNA - A seminar dubbed: 'Kofi Awoonor and the challenge of history,' has been organised in recognition of the late Professor Awoonor's literary works and service to humanity.

Prof Emeritus Lade Wosornu told Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a symposium on the late professor in Accra that Awoonor's contribution 'is self-evident', and that the process to honour him has already began with the launching of Awoonor's Prize Competition.

Mr Adjei Agyei-Baah, Lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG) Institute of Continuing and Distance Education, said the works of Awoonor promoted Africa poetry and reflected the ideals of the African culture.

Prof Lufemi Taifwo of Cornel University of the UK said Awoonor defended indigenous practices and followed a sophisticated tradition and thrived on the power of ideas.

Awoonor's prize competition to award excellent literary works of students has been put in motion to inspire the youth to develop interest in literature for cognitive development.

Prof Koku Anyidoho, a Linguistics Lecturer at the UG said Prof Awoonor's book entitled 'Promise of Hope' would be launched on September 19.

Local and internationals personalities from Ghana, Nigeria, US and Europe would present papers on in memory of late Awoonor.

Prof Awoonor was killed in September last year in Nairobi-Kenya, when Islamic militants attacked a shopping mall.
