Sunyani will on Sunday 21st September, 2014 host Peace Prayer Festival to commemorate this year's International Day of Peace on the theme: the “Right of Peoples to Peace”.
The event is being organized by Global Media Foundation, human rights media advocacy organization in collaboration with Pentecost International Workshop Center, Think Health International, Global Hands on Natural Environmental Care and Legacy Promotion Center.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
In a released signed by the CEO of Global Media Foundation, Raphael Godlove Ahenu Jr. the occasion will be used to launch a new project title: Million Trees for Africa Project code name: “The Peace Tree Project” which will see million trees planted across Africa which will serve as a platform to promote peace in war torn countries.
He said local ownership begins by ensuring that peace-building priorities are determined locally by the people. He stated that “If local people and groups are included in defining the problem, they can be engaged to also take ownership of the solutions”.
We should work on the basis that if people feel that the peace belongs to them, they are more likely to take personal responsibility for preventing its collapse. In this way, every citizen becomes a peacekeeper and peace becomes sustainable.
The CEO called on the United Nations to reaffirm its commitment to ensure that its Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights is fully achieved.
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution36/67PDF documentof the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.
