Don't beg bad losers to come back - Atta Akyea urges NPP leadership
18.09.2014 LISTEN

The MP for Abuakwa South Samuel Atta Akyea has urged the leadership of the NPP to discard the practice of begging sour losing candidates in internal party elections to come back.

He was responding to fears that losing candidates after the October 18 congress to elect a flagbearer may play hard to get and abandon the New Patriotic Party in the 2016 presidential elections.

He did not mention names.
In the past, a flagbearer aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen announced after the 2007 presidential primary, he had left the party claiming his followers were being victimized after he lost the flagbearer ticket to Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to Atta Akyea, sour losers are bad politicians because even in a family setting, a family member is not begged to fulfill his responsibilities.

“So when you have a bad day and say I don't belong to the family and I want to enjoy opposition. I don't want to come along and campaign to ensure the party comes to power then you have denied your family rights,” he maintained.

In what analysts say is signs of things to come, a court injunction on the party's national delegates' conference is being sought by two party members shortly after two flagbearer aspirants Alan Kyerematen and Addai Nimo complained that the October 18 date  was too short to effectively campaign.

But Atta Akyea has warned that “if anybody contest now and he should lose and people should go on their knees to beg him to come and help his family to come back to power, then he is a bad politician. We shouldn't waste time on him”.

He picked out the predecessor MP in his Abuakwa South constituency Nana Akufo-Addo as an example of a “good” politician.

“The best example we have is Akufo-Addo. After Sunyani [Congress in which Akufo-Addo lost] Akufo- Addo was with [John] Kufuor through and through”

Sour losers, he said “don't have conscience or political sensitivity”.
