Ashanti Bar President Questions Tone Of NPP Legal And Constitution Committee

There has yet to be finality to the power play among elected and appointed executives of the New Patriotic Party.

The decision by General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong and his chairman Paul Afoko for the party's finance and communication directors to proceed on compulsory leave caused a stir in the NPP's hierarchy.

The final report of a legal committee set up to resolve the impasse noted that the general secretary and his chairman acted in contravention with the constitution of the party.

It made several orders including asking the General Secretary to reinstate the communications and finance directors and to apologize for accusing the finance director in a radio interview for financial misappropriation.

However the recommendations and directives of the legal and constitutional committee hit a deadlock as Mr. Agyapong last week objected to the power of the committee to make definitive orders.

Latest to wade into the discussions is president of the Ashanti Bar Association who contends “the committee was way out of order”.

Speaking to ultimate radio, lawyer Yaw Boafo stated that the committee's communiqué should have adopted a rather advisory tone.

He questioned the basis for the committee to spell out orders for the two highest oversight roles in the party.

“You don't have a situation where a committee which is purely advisory and can only be referenced, on its own motion, gangs up, uses evidence on radio stations and then actually go out to make a mandatory order,” he stated.

Lawyer Boafo further condemned the continuous vilification of the party's chairman and the general secretary by other likely elected executive members of the party.

He stated, “the idea that every time when Kwabena Agyapong does something is wrong and when Afoko does something is wrong but when Freddy Blay goes on air to call his chairman a blatant liar that one is acceptable, that is the problem I see in the party.”
