The Ashanti regional health directorate has had to self-finance all its activities aimed at education and prevention of the deadly Ebola viral disease.

In the wake of the epidemic which is sweeping across the West African sub region, the president, John Dramani Mahama announced that an amount of 6 million Ghana cedis had been earmarked for education and prevention of the disease in Ghana.

But the regional health directorate says it is yet to receive any such funds from the central government.

Sharing these concerns with Ultimate Radio Ashanti regional health director, Dr Alexis Nang Beifubah said the regional health directorate has established the region's only isolation centre at the Suntreso Government hospital without government funding.

He emphasized that the isolation center room was “a local proactive initiative from the Ashanti regional directorate.”

He added that they were “still waiting for the isolation center government had promised to provide to cater for the central zone including Ashanti region, Brong Ahafo region and the Eastern Region.”

The directorate has also published educational and other material as well as the procurement of personal protection equipment for medical personnel all at its cost.

Dr Beifubah however assured that the regional health directorate is working assiduously to ensure they are prepared to contain any case of Ebola in the region.

The deadly disease has so far killed over two thousand people in West Africa but Ghana has not recorded any case so far.
