We will weather the storm at Korle Bu; new Board chair assures

Chairman of reconstituted governing board of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Anthony Sallar says the new board is determined to make Korle Bu, the hospital of choice in Africa.  

According to Dr. Sallar, the board is well aware of the challenges facing the nation's premier medical facility which has attracted negative publicity over the years and is confident the team will collaborate with management, to transform the facility.

“We are fully aware of the onerous responsibilities that face us but we are confident that with adequate planning, dedication and commitment we will weather the storm and make Korle Bu, the hospital of choice and an excellent referral Centre on the continent,” Dr. Sallar told Myjoyonline.com Wednesday.

He added: “With the Chief Executive steering the affairs, and the board playing its meaningful role of oversight and policy (and the dedicated staff of Korle Bu, all playing their diverse roles, I am confident that when all is said and done, Korle Bu will deliver the best healthcare, training of health personnel and be a Center of Excellence in all its spheres of operation.”

“In the coming days we would meet and with the CEO and later others in the Hospital all in a bid to make a difference. The vision, strategy and tactics coupled with motivation, necessary controls and needed parameters and guidelines provided by all and sundry, will begin to put Korle Bu on the road to greater heights,” he stated.

Biographical Profile: Anthony Mawuli Sallar, PhD., MBA., MPH

Dr. Sallar has extensive experience in academia, health sector, corporations, and government; with over twenty years of experience in epidemiologic studies, study design, research, and teaching combined with many years of working in accounting, management, and internal auditing.

Dr. Sallar is currently a Senior Lecturer at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) School of Business where he lectures in Ethics, Research Methods, and Statistics. At GIMPA he is the West African Regional Director of UCLA/Johnson & Johsnson Management Development Institute (A Management Development Program for Managers and Leaders of Health Care Organisations). 

Dr. Sallar obtained his PhD in Epidemiology and minor concentrations in Demography and International Health from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He also holds degrees in a B.Sc. in Business Administration, Accounting Option (Legon), MBA in Management Information Systems and Accounting (Baruch College of the City University of New York, New York), and MPH in Epidemiology and Health Policy (New York Medical College).

Dr. Sallar's other certifications include Certificate of Competency as Trainer of Trainers in Leadership, Management and Governance for Health Systems Strengthening, March 2012 Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) in collaboration with African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and International Faculty Program Certificate in June 2012 at the ESE Business School, University  of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain.

Prior to joining GIMPA, Dr Sallar taught at Ohio University and Jackson State University in USA. At Ohio University he was a member of Master's and Doctoral Dissertation Committees and developed graduate courses on HIV/AIDS in Africa, Maternal and Child Health in Africa, and co-developed the African Community Health Graduate Certificate Program.

Dr Sallar while pursuing his doctorate degree also worked at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and Office of Public Health in Louisiana, USA as the Evaluation Coordinator of HIV Prevention Programs. In the latter, he was responsible for preparation of the monitoring and evaluation sections of US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) HIV Prevention Cooperative Agreement application. Dr Sallar also participated in HIV Prevention Community process through staff evaluation committee, conducting evaluation of the process and preparing the evaluation section of the HIV prevention plan. Also as the Team Leader of the Program Evaluation and Planning team he was responsible for planning and developing evaluation tools, conducting and evaluating Prevention Programs workshops, seminars and/or trainings related to HIV/AIDS in Louisiana.

Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr Sallar worked for a period of 9 years in internal audits divisions of the City of New York and Catholic Hospital Medical Centers in New York City.

Dr. Sallar has conducted research which encompasses HIV/AIDS in national and international settings, health literacy, health of African immigrants and refugees in USA, and injury epidemiology. He has taught classes in Epidemiology, Program Evaluation, Research and Quantitative Methods, HIV/AIDS and other STIs, Maternal and Child Health, Ethics, and Statistics. Since 2006 Dr. Sallar has been abstract reviewer of APHA Caucus on Refugee and Immigrant Health and APHA HIV AIDS Section.

Dr Sallar is a member of professional associations such as American Public Health Association (APHA), African Studies Association, International AIDS Society, Global Health Council, and International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE)

Dr Sallar has presented more than 35 research papers in local and international conferences in US, Canada, Netherlands, Senegal, South Africa, and Ghana and also participated in workshops in USA, Canada, Kenya and Spain. He currently serves as a reviewer for peer reviewed journals and for 3 years was the Chairman of the Refugee and Immigrant Health Caucus of the American Public Health Association.

He has published in peer reviewed journals such as: New England Journal of Medicine; Social Science Medicine; Preventive Medicine; International Quarterly of Community Health Education; African Health Sciences; Journal of National Medical Association; Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities; and Sexuality and Culture.
