Residents of Wassa Adonoi, near Brodie in the Wassa Amenfi East district of the Western region, were plunged into a state of shock last Thursday when news broke out that six energetic young men in the area had died through illegal mining, known in the local parlance as galamsey.

The six, who were said to be illegal miners, met their untimely death when the pit in which they were working allegedly collapsed on them.

According to sources, only one survived.
DAILY GUIDE learnt that there were uncontrollable wailings by relatives of the deceased when they saw the lifeless bodies of their people being retrieved.

The assembly member for Bodie, Dan Oduro who confirmed the story to journalists, indicated that the tragic incident occurred at about 2:00 pm on that faithful day.

He pointed out that the deceased persons, whose ages ranged between 29 and 34 years, were all indigenes.

He indicated that with the help of other galamsey operators, the mortal remains of the deceased were retrieved and deposited at a hospital in the area.

He mentioned the names of the deceased as Emmanuel Tetteh, 35; Frank Oppong, 33; Kwesi Barimah, 34; Kojo Mieku, 34; Papa Kwame and Saga, 29.

The assemblyman mentioned one Kofi Anyensu as the only survival.

An eyewitness account had it that the six were on their usual galamsey business at the site on that fateful day when their colleagues, after realizing that the pit had caved in, raised an alarm which attracted people to the scene.
