3 Robbers Busted

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested three young men suspected to be behind some separate robberies at Amasaman and Madina, near Accra.

The suspects are Nana Agyemang Yaw Opoku, 31, unemployed; Shakibu Iddrisu, 18, unemployed and Elvis Opoku, 30, taxi driver.

Yaw Opoku and one Frank Sarpong, (now deceased) 31-year-old unemployed, are said to have on September 10, 2014, attacked and robbed a family in their residence at Sapeiman near Amasaman with two foreign pistols and made away with five mobile phones, three laptops, one Ipad, assorted jewelries and an unspecified amount of both Ghanaian and foreign currencies.

In addition to the pistols, 30 rounds of ammunition, seven screw drivers, three cutters and one pair of pliers were retrieved from Yaw Opoku.

Addressing journalists in Accra yesterday, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Accra Regional Police Commander, said after the operation, the two were chased by the victim, which attracted other residents in the vicinity to also pursue the robbers.

He said the suspects were attacked by the sympathizing residents and Sarpong, who sustained severe injuries from the attack, died when the police were taking him to the Amasaman Hospital for treatment.

The Accra Regional Police Commander noted that but for the timely intervention of the police, Yaw Opoku would have also been lynched by the angry residents.

He said that in a previous robbery, Sarpong, at about 2:00 am on August 13, 2014, attacked a couple in their residence at ACP Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region.

The Police Officer averred that in the process, the couple struggled with Sarpong and disarmed him, but he managed to escape with injuries he had sustained during the struggle and left his weapon behind.

DCOP Tetteh Yohuno indicated that Yaw Opoku, on March 28, 2011, broke into the residence of a pastor and made away with a 42-inch LG television and a VW Passat saloon car with trade licence plate number 8358.

Based on information, the Accra Regional Police Commander said, the police arrested one Bernard Asare (Yaw Opoku's accomplice) who was in possession of the stolen VW Passat at Odokor in Accra.

He said during investigation, Asare mentioned Yaw Opoku as his accomplice, leading to the retrieval of Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Camry, VW Passat and a number of Plasma TVs.

Madina Shop Raiders
DCOP Tetteh Yohuno, touching on the robbery case of Shakibu and Elvis, said at 2:00 am on September 10, the Accra Regional Police night patrol team, patrolling around Adabraka in Accra, spotted a Nisan March taxi cab with registration number GR 4353-13 with the suspects on board.

According to him, the team, being suspicious, stopped the taxi, conducted a search in it and found six plasma TV sets of different brands which were being conveyed to another location.

DCOP Tetteh Yohuno further stated that the suspects were then escorted to the Accra Regional CID office and upon investigation, it was revealed that Shakibu and Elvis broke into a shop at Madina on September 10 and carried away the items.
