09.09.2014 LISTEN

The Otumihene of Akyem Otumi in Ghana, Barima Odame Ampem Darko II recently stopped by the studios of Top Afric for a one on one interview.

He answered questions that were posed to him so as to educate the general audience on the responsibilities of a chief. Barima Odame Ampem Darko II explained in his interview that the responsibilities of a chief includes resolving community issues, partnering state institutions in developing public infrastructures, being a liaison between the public and the government and most importantly being a neutral mediator.

He further stressed that a Chief ought not to be involved in partisan politics but can be involved with politics in general. He explained further that his subjects belong to different political parties, it is important for chiefs to remain neutral, thereby commanding total respect among their people.

Ask if everyone could become a chief, he said no “In the “Akan” tradition of Ghana, first you must be a member of the royal family, and then only of female ancestry. The son of my sister can become a chief but my son can't ascend the throne.

The Otumihene went on to say chieftaincy has been there long before modern day governance and that both must coexist peacefully. I support dual systems of authority it serves as check and balance. When questioned about the term “African Time”, a term used to describe the lateness attitude of most Africans, Barima Odame Ampem Darko II answered by stating that a leader should lead by example. When the leader shows up on time, the subjects or followers will come to mimic your lead.

Nana your subjects are in Ghana and you in Hamburg, how do you explain this to our viewers? He gave a smile and said this is not very appropriate; I have lived here the past couple of years with my family and would need to organize our return.

Barima Odame Ampem Darko II is a very punctual, patient, and charismatic individual. His followers will most definitely come to love his leadership.

His coronation Thanksgiving Service is set to be held on the 14th of September, 2014, at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Hamburg, while the reception will take place at the Imic e.V. Reception Hall. Event will start from 1pm in the afternoon at the Church and then continue from 4pm at the reception hall.
