Pay August Salary Or We'll Strike Again - POTAG
02.09.2014 LISTEN

Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Minister of Education

Barely a week after calling off their three-month old strike, polytechnic teachers are threatening another strike if  their August salaries are not paid.

POTAG embarked on a   strike  in May to protest the non- payment of their book and research allowance.

The decision led to the closure of all polytechnics in the country.

Government also decided to  freeze  the salaries of the teachers after the Ministry of Education issued a directive to the Controller and Accountant General's Department, ordering them not to pay the August salaries of the striking teachers

POTAG however called off its  strike  after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the association and government.

Some members of the POTAG at a press conference in Cape Coast in the Central Region announced plans to strike again because of the delay in payment.

Speaking to  Citi News , the Chairman of the Cape Coast POTAG chapter, Mr. Isaac  Aggrey- Fynn said ' the Association is made up of teaching and non-teaching staff, only the salaries of the non- teaching staff had been paid.

'We have the teaching staff and non-teaching staff . The non- teaching staff are able to assess their August salary but surprisingly the teaching staff are unable to assess their salaries and this is troubling,' he said.

He said POTAG members have resolved to advise themselves if their salaries do not reflect in their bank accounts.

According to  Citi News'  correspondent Central regional correspondent, Kwamena Bamfo Adjei, the polytechnic teachers held their emergency meeting and called on the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Employment and Controller to release their August salary.

'Their members are indeed piling up pressure on the campuses to express their displeasure about the situation. They resolved that they are calling on government to as a matter of urgency revert the situation,' he explained.
