North-London based Mission Dine Club (MDC), a charity formed by Ghanaian-born Dame Asafu-Adjaye 28 years ago, was honoured with the first Fine Dining Plus Dinner & Ball fundraiser, which took place last Saturday at Cumberland Hotel in Harrow, north London.

The ball, which was organised by Ghanaian-born barrister and former Harrow Mayoress Awula Serwah, drew a wide cross-section of the community. In underscoring the pan-African theme of the evening, each table was identified by a continental or diasporan African country.

The Ghana table included former Harrow Mayor Nana Asante and her parents Mr & Mrs KB Asante, Harrow councillor Camilla Bath and husband, Moravian Church minister Rev Edward Sanniez and wife, Dr Leroy Logan, a former police officer of Jamaican heritage who gave a speech on the importance of community and his part-Nigerian wife Gretl, whose favourite record, 'Sweet Mother' played out the evening. In dancefloor was opened with ET Mensah's highlife track 'Sunday Mirror'.

A sizable sum was raised from a generous contribution by Barclays Bank and sale of raffle tickets. Raffle prizes were donated by the likes of Tesco, Next, Nando's, Marco Aldany, Cumberland Hotel, and Shiri Achu, who exhibited her African artwork and donated a piece of artwork for the raffle.

"I'm very grateful to everyone who attended, and all the people and companies that supported with donations and prizes," said Dame Betty Asafu-Adjaye.

“We've supported Dame Betty's organisation for many years, so it's particularly pleasing that the beneficiary of the first Fine Dining & Ball was another Ghanaian-led organisation,” added Awula Serwah.
