On behalf of all students of the University of Ghana, we write to humbly draw your attention to the plights of students as a result of the ongoing strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
Sir, evidence from similar strike actions have resulted in the disruption of the academic calendar of tertiary institutions; a situation which has not been favorable to any Ghanaian student. A clear example is the indefinite postponement of the reopening date of the University of Ghana which was hitherto scheduled for the 13th of August, 2014. Such disruptions put pressure on students to complete their academic work in limited time.
Moreover, the image of universities and other tertiary institutions are highly affected by strike actions. Many students from across the globe have over the years built confidence in our educational system. However, prolonged strike actions pose a direct threat to this hard earned reputation. International students get stranded in the midst of these strike actions and thus send wrong avertible signals to their home countries.
Again, in the quest to place this country at a level of sustained economic growth, it is imperative for considerable attention to be given to the development of human resources and tertiary institutions have championed this course over the years. It therefore behooves government and all relevant stakeholders to take appropriate actions that would prevent the total breakdown of the educational structure at the highest level.
In light of these, we humbly plead that you consider the predicament of students and respond to the plights of our dear lecturers who have over the years held the front of our tertiary education.
We pray our voices will be heard. Thank you.
