Government Must Free UTAG To Reopen Universities Quick And Soon
01.09.2014 LISTEN

The Navrongo Chapter of UDS TESCON-NPP wishes to appeal to the government and the leadership of the University Teachers' Association of Ghana (UTAG) to speed up their negotiations in order to reach a mutual consensus quick.

We indulge the stakeholders to reconsider their decision to postpone

indefinitely the reopening date of our University especially. This is in reaction to an announcement made on the University's official website (www.uds.edu.gh) on August 26, 2014 and signed by the Registrar.

As students of the University, we therefore appeal to the government especially to prioritize the plight of the students in her deliberations and negotiations with the lecturers in order to curtail the unfortunate and weird indefinite postponement of the

reopening date for the 2014/15 academic year and its attendant bizarre effects.

As earlier scheduled, the University for Development Studies was due to reopen and begin registration on August 29 and September 5, 2014 for Freshers and Continuing Students

respectively. But, the failure of the government to pay the 'book and research allowance' owed UTAG or at least acknowledge indebtedness to the association and promise to pay same has landed all Universities of Ghana in an uncharted waters.

Notwithstanding, the government must learn from her previous dealings with POTAG to arrest this one this time. For strict insistence on the procedures used in resolving the POTAG strike could possibly cause an avoidable financial loss to the state in the form of JUDGEMENT DEBT. Government should retrieve the dubious, fraudulent (as declared by the Supreme Court) cedis wrongly paid to business man, Mr. Alfred A. Woyome to solve our current educational hiccups; and the amounts to Isofoton SA and Waterville Holdings

to address the nation's power crisis. Clearly, government has misplaced priorities!

Ending, we admonish government not to repeat the same PR gimmicks she indulged in with POTAG with its twin-association(UTAG) this time. This will allow our beloved lecturers to consider proroguing their decision as soon as possible so that our academic calendar does not get terminated.

Long live Ghana!
Long live NPP!!
God bless UDS and TESCON!!!
