492 Cholera Cases Hits Eastern Region

Makeshift Cholera unit at one of the country's health centres

A total of 492 cholera cases have been recorded in the Eastern Region, Mr Mukeila Buhura, the Regional Health Director of Disease Surveillance Unit has told DAILY GUIDE.

Mr. Mukeila hinted that the reports were gathered from 11 hospitals in the region, out of the 26 Districts and Municipalities.

According to him, the top five health facilities with the highest cholera outbreaks were the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Municipal hospital with the highest figure of 231; Akuapem North had 86 cases; New Juaben with 62; West Akyem-Asamankese recorded 30; and Kwahu West also had 30 cases.

The other six health centers included Lower Manya Krobo Municipal which recorded 22 cases; Birim Central had 17; Fanteakwa Municipal had 8; while Upper West Akim- Adeiso and Suhum Municipal respectively recorded nine and two cases as the lowest average.

The Eastern Regional Health Director of Disease Surveillance Unit stated that his outfit had put measures and programmes in place which would help to reduce the spread of cholera outbreak at the regional level.

'Health, sanitation and water are part of our 12 thematic areas of operation for now, and this forum is to help educate ourselves and our mothers who sell foodstuff to us to prevent the spread of the disease,' Mr. Mukeila hinted.

He noted that no death had been recorded, adding that despite the regular education on radio, cholera cases were increasing and attributed it to lawlessness.

He tasked the public to keep their environments clean, while those who compromise cleanliness should be prosecuted.
