A new Award scheme for hard working journalists and media practitioners on the business beat in Ghana has been introduced and launched in Accra. Dubbed the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for Business and Financial Journalism, it is for all registered members of the Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ).

“…this award scheme is limited to fully subscribed members of IFEJ,” the organizers have stated.

Launching the Awards in Accra recently, President of the Institute, Mr Lloyd Evans said the Flamingo Awards has no intentions to compete but to will complement all existing media awards in the country. “This award is to deepen the level of financial journalism in the country,” he stated.

According to the organizers, the award is being instituted following the realization that financial journalism in Ghana needed to be enhanced yet the practitioners are not motivated enough to put up their best. They assured that the awards will not be a one off event but an annual one for the sake of it.

The award is modeled to improve the level of financial journalism with the ultimate aim of developing training models for post training of financial journalists in the country and beyond.

“Our Principal objects are to match the level of the financial press in the Southern and Eastern Africa and also to enable Ghanaian journalists win international awards. We will work with corporate institutions for financial support in that direction,” Mr Evans stated.

In all, there would be about 10 different categories of awards that would be issued. These include ICT, Finance, Extractives, Agribusiness, Tourism, Business, Developmental Issues, Rural Banking/Micro Finance and Micro Enterprise, Business of Health and Best News Story. The ultimate is the Best Business and Financial Journalist of the year which will go to the Best Finance plus any other two awards.

The first edition of the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for Business and Financial Journalism would be sponsored by the World Bank, Enterprise Life Insurance and GIZ/SECO among others.
