I am fit to do the job - Akufo-Addo snubs 'old age' critics

With days to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Special Delegates congress to prune the number of flagbearer aspirants, one of the frontrunners for the race, Nana Akufo-Addo has debunked claims he is not fit for active political life.

Ending the first phase of his nationwide tour in Tema on Tuesday, Nana Akuffo-Addo responded to heightening speculation about his ability to actively participate in politics should he be elected flagbearer and President in the 2016 General Elections.

“There are people going around saying that I am not well, so I can't do the job…I don't know whether they are my doctors and they have an idea of what is happening to me…But I am very certain I am strong and I can do the work”, he told an ecstatic crowd.

Citing Cote d'Ivoire's Alassane Ouattara as an example he noted that although the Ivorian President was two years older than him, he (Ouattara) with “vision has been able to turn the fortunes of that country”.

“And I am asking the Ghanaian people: give me the opportunity to do for Ghana what Alassne Ouattara is doing for La Cote d'Ivoire”, he stressed.

The NPP is set to host a Super Delegates Conference on Sunday to trim down the number of flagbearer aspirants to five.

Seven people have filed to lead the party in the 2016 elections.

They are Nana Akufo-Addo, Alan Kyeremanten, Joe Ghartey, Addai Nimo, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Kofi Osei Ameyaw and Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku.

According to the party's constitution, the number of people eligible to contest for the flagbearership should not exceed five.

This has necessitated the special delegates conference on Sunday August 31, 2014.
