Reconstruction Of Bawku

Reconstruction Of Bawku
26.08.2014 LISTEN

It is of grave concern that I write this, to add to the many voices calling for peace in the Bawku Municipality. As much as I agree to the called of the Interior Minister, Mark Woyongo on the people of Bawku to remain calm and his resolved to bring the perpetrators to book. However, I disagree to some aspect of his statements, which was published on the 19/8/14 by myjoyonline.

He said, "I want to treat this as an isolated case ...".In this era of modern warfare, it is wrong to isolate a case in post-conflict reconstruction. Because it is a critical facet of long-term peace building. Therefore, it is important for the minister to open the mind and adopt a broad-based approach to post-conflict reconstruction instead of always attributing shooting incidents to armed robbery.

It is, therefore, sometimes difficult to know when a conflict has ended, owing to the volatile nature of it.Furthermore, in the same conflict areas, "regions of calm may exist alongside others where violence continues, and even generally calm areas may be subject to sporadic outbreaks of violence "(Goovaerts, Gasser, Belman Inbal, 2006).

This point out that the transition from conflict conflict to peace is not smooth. Many people have lost their lives in this times, all is been attributed to armed robbery. Ask what is outcome of investigation? Therefore, it is important for the minister and the security agencies to look into the recent shooting incidents holistically to prevent any recurrence of conflict in the area.Isolating the case, before the commencement of investigation is like closing the door to other outcomes.

The road from conflict to peace is a long and bumpy. Areas that have been through conflict have a very high chance of relapsing to conflict. UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2007) also draws attention to the fact that "the incidence of the recurrence of violent conflict within five years after a peace agreement is significantly high ".

Therefore, concluding negotiations and signings of a political peace agreement to end a conflict, while important, do not often mark the beginning of sustainable peace. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that some conflicts on our communities have gone through several signings of peace agreements.

I therefore, call on the minister and security agencies to adopt a holistic approach to post-conflict reconstruction. The reconstruction should also address the root causes. Thus, the construction of a new environment that prevents recurrence of violent conflict.

I therefore, use this media to express my condolences to the bereaved and sympathizers of the three victims (a productive and goodly souls ).May the souls of this victims rest in perfect peace.
