La General Hospital has received a major boost from Macbells Company Limited, producers of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, in dealing with cholera-related issues by donating various items to the hospital.

The items included mattresses, disinfectants, bleach, liquid soap, gloves and some of the company's products.

The gesture was in response to an SOS message the hospital sent out for public support to help contain the huge number of cases of cholera recorded at the hospital, following the recent outbreak of the disease in parts of Accra.

The Financial Controller of Macbells Company Limited, Raymond Bampoe-Addo, who led a team from the company to present the items said, 'As a company that is situated in the La community where the hospital is also located, the management and staff were witnesses to the increasing stress on the hospital following the cholera outbreak, hence our decision to offer a hand of support.'

The Senior Administrator of the hospital, Philip Afeti Korto, expressed his gratitude to Macbells for the kind gesture.

'I must say that I am extremely impressed because this is a hard time for us as a hospital, especially with the treatment of the cholera patients. We thought that the cases will decrease over time but they keep on increasing,'' he said.

'Macbells' action should open the doors for more assistance. The hospital needs more support,'' he added.

The La General Hospital continues to record an increasing number of cholera cases. Officials say that the hospital recorded 74 new cases between Saturday and Monday last week.

According to the administrator, the hospital has treated more than 586 cases since it recorded the first case on June 9. He also revealed that six persons have died at the hospital from the disease.
