Some international students in Ghana say they are losing confidence in the country's tertiary education due to persistent disruption in the academic calendar.

They are worried for three years running lecturers' strike has preceded the beginning of the academic year.

The concerns follow the decision by government and university authorities to indefinitely postpone re-opening of schools due to the Ebola scare and lecturers' strike.

Some foreign students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology indicated it is frustrating for them to go through such circumstances for which they fled their home countries to school Ghana.

One of them describes the trend as 'running from frying pan to fire'.

“These are some of the reasons why we left our countries to Ghana to school, but it seems we are running from frying pan to fire. Education in Ghana is becoming worse.” he passionately told LUV FMs Prince Appiah.

Currently, polytechnic and public university lecturers in the country are on a protracted nationwide strike over what they say is unpaid book and research allowances by the government.

Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) has refused to return to lecture halls in a three- month industrial action, forcing authorities to close down all institutions across the country.

Parents and various student bodies have pleaded with the teachers and government to settle the impasse, but to no avail.

Under the current harsh economic situation, heightened by depreciation of the local currency, the foreign students, mostly Nigerians, fear they would have to pay more than they had estimated.

They are unhappy about the development which, according to them, will only prolong their stay in Ghana amidst increased cost of living.

The situation however is not all gloom for everybody as referred students have all the time to prepare and re-sit their exams in relaxed atmosphere.
