Herbal Medicine Practitioners Bemoan Maximum Attention Given To Orthodox Medicine

Traditional medicine practitioners are protesting what describe as undue neglect of their input in the fight against epidemics.

The Ashanti Region branch of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners is questioning the exclusion of herbal medicine in current national discussion on the Ebola virus.

Regional President, Joseph Takyi, says similar attitude to past discovery of cure for some deadly has dampened the spirit of its practitioners.

He believes equal attention to and investment in herbal medicine would guarantee the safety of Ghanaians in case of an outbreak.

“We have come out with remedies to some deadly diseases in the past but received little attention. And this has been a great disincentive for practitioners explore further to come out with antidotes for outbreaks including this strange Ebola disease.” He cried out.

Mr. Takyi spoke at the Annual General Meeting of practitioners in Kumasi.

The group as part of efforts to clamp down on quacks says it will soon deploy a task-force to monitor operations of practitioners.

Juliana Gyimah is First Vice President of the federation.

“We will not spare those who are seen to be contravening the rules and regulations of the profession. Culprits will be made to face the full rigor of the law," She cautioned.
