Harare (AFP) - Zimbabwe's national football team coach Ian Gorowa, who has allegedly gone for seven months without pay, has resigned, a top official of the football association said Wednesday.

"He (Gorowa) sent his resignation letter last night," said Jonathan Mashingaidze, the chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

He refused to state the reasons for Gorowa's stepping down, promising details after the ZIFA board meeting later on Wednesday.

But in a letter whose contents were published by two independent dailies, NewsDay and Daily, Gorowa cited unpaid salaries and failing relationships with the football governing body for his departure.

Gorowa, a former national player, was appointed Zimbabwe coach last year, replacing German national Klaus Dieter Pagels.

Gorowa had coached South African premiership clubs Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows among other teams before his stint with the national squad.

Zimbabwe national team has failed to qualify for the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The national side has been battling with funding problems and the coach and players have been owed outstanding payouts and bonuses.
