NHIS Cards For Registration: Supreme Court Stops Afari-Gyan

The Supreme Court has unanimously granted a perpetual injunction restraining the Electoral Commission (EC) from using the National Health Insurance Card in its current form as an identity card for voter registrations.

This means the Electoral Commission (EC) can now go ahead with the voter registration exercise which was suspended by a Supreme Court last week.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted the reliefs which was sought by the National Youth Organiser of the Peoples National Convention Abu Ramadan.

Mr. Ramadan and Evans Nimako sued the EC over the use of the National Health Insurance (NHIS) Card as a proof of qualification to register.

They were seeking true and proper interpretation of Article 42 of the Constitution in relation to the use of the National Health Insurance (NHIS) Card as a proof of qualification to register as a voter pursuant to the Public Elections.

They secured an injunction against the exercise which was scheduled for July 25, 2014.

It is unclear when the EC will start the exercise which is expected to register persons who have now turned 18 years and persons who could not register during the previous registration exercise.
