General News Ashaiman: Drivers prepare for demonstration
JUL 29, 2014 LISTEN

Some commercial road users in Ashaiman are gearing up for a 'show-down' later this week in protest against the bad nature of roads in the municipality.

A Trustee of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) branch of the Ashaiman Lorry station Mr. Augustine Kyeremeh, who confirmed the development to the Business Day, stated that the Union is trying very hard to avert the demonstration.

He revealed that countless appeals and letters have been delivered to leaders of the Union to sanction the demonstration for commencement.

According to him, the Union leaders are however not in favour of the proposal due to a similar demonstration last year which resulted in mayhem and destruction of properties.

Mr. Kyeremeh disclosed that, some neighboring communities like Klagon, Lashibi, Nungua, Sa- kumono and Communities 21 and 22 have pressed on them to protest against the bad nature of the main Ashaiman-Nungua road.

He maintained that the people from these communities sought to take advantage of the grievances of commercial drivers in Ashaiman to carry out their own intended plan of demonstration.

“We won't do that, when they want people to demonstrate on their behalf, they look to Ashaiman. We have been consistently tagged as a violent community and we are not going toj allow ourselves to be used again','I he stated.

He further revealed that the Municipal Chief Executive had been in constant touch with them J explaining the circumstances than have led to a slowdown in the road construction in the municipality.!

A check by the Business Day] at the Ministry of Roads and! Highways revealed that the mair* Ashaiman-Nungua road has bee J abandoned by the Contractor duel to lack of funds.      ;
