The National Association of Sand and Stone workers and Tipper Trucks Users (NasWottu) has called on government to mandate district assemblies to issue permits for sand winning.

Chairman for the association, Peter Donkor said the process of obtaining a permit for operation was very cumbersome.

He made the call recently when he led executive members of the association to pay a courtesy call on the Chief executive officer (Ceo) of the Minerals Commission, Dr. toni aubynn, in accra.

The association boasts of over 11,000 members.
They congratulated Dr. aubynn on his appointment as the Ceo of the commission.

The main objective of the meeting was to express their dissatisfaction with the laws which regulated sand and stone winning in the country.

other concerns raised by the association were the issuance of licence and the monitoring of illegal sand and stone winning in the country.

In ghana, the mining and minerals act (act 703), also regulates the activities of those who engage in sand and stone winning.

The act classifies sand and stone as major minerals, and therefore subjects them to the same process of obtaining license or permit like those who mine gold, diamond, bauxite, etc.

Mr Donkor opined that the long period of waiting, coupled with the cumbersome administrative procedures and the stress of having to travel all the way to accra for a permit encourages others to engage in illegal activities.

He explained that the decentralization of the issuance of permits will minimize and ultimately curb the illegal sand and stone winning in the country.

Mr. Donkor explained that decentralization will promote revenue mobilization for the government and coordination of its activities.

Welcoming the association to the Minerals Commission, the Ceo, Dr. aubynn lauded the initiative to ensure sanity in the sand winning sector.
