Calm Returns On Ghana – Togo Border

The border was guarded by the military and other security personnel to protect lives and property of civilians in the area.

The Aflao Sector Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Julius Gborglah disclosed this in interview with DAILY GUIDE yesterday.

He noted that though there were some clashes on the Togo side of the border, the border was not entirely closed since such an order would have to come directly from the Presidency.

He said security personnel at the border managed the situation, noting that information was sent to the top hierarchy for further directives.

He noted that 'the border is safe, business has returned to normalcy and our intelligence report indicates that there have not been any infiltration, we are safe.'

Last Saturday there were reports that the Ghana-Togo border had been closed after some youth in Togo clashed with the Police and other security personnel over the arrest of their friend.

According to reports, the matter involved some illegal fuel dealers at Kordzoviakofe in Lome, Togo close to the border.

The irate youth threw stones at the security personnel, blocked the road linking the two countries and set tyres and other flammable materials on fire on the streets.

Military and police reinforcement in Togo helped to restore calm to the area.

Security personnel in Ghana were on alert to prevent an escalation of the clashes.

Mr. Gboglah said due to the healthy relationship between security personnel of the two countries, a joint border security strategy was put in place to facilitate the movement of pedestrians.

He urged traders and pedestrians to desist from using unapproved routes.

Mr. Gboglah also called on government to support the security personnel along Ghana's borders with vehicles and motorbikes to improve their operations.
