The death of Mr. Ben Antwi born on the 5th of May 1966 in Kumasi/Ghana, to Ghanaian parents was a bitter pill for the community in Hamburg. Investigations conducted revealed that he was buried anonymous despite having close relatives in the city.

Mostly all deaths within the community are either reported to the consulate or the embassy in Berlin, they subsequently report back to the community leadership. Ghanaians are well known for their love for funeral would have organized a befitting burial ceremony.

Investigation conducted by the Ghana Consul in Hamburg at the request of Ghana Union Hamburg revealed the following:

The police station 'LKA 417' at Bruno-Georges Platz 1 in Hamburg confirmed the deceased Mr. Antwi was found death in his Hamburger apartment at Wandsbeker Marktstr. 30, on 21st April, 2014. The police had been called by neighbours who were worried about a strong smell from the apartment and a full letterbox.

It seemed Mr. Antwi had been dead already for some time what was confirmed by the medical Institute where he was brought to for postmortem. It was also confirmed that it was a natural death. The deceased was then transported to the mortuary at the Hamburg Öjendorf cemetary.

The authorities of Öjendorf cemetery, we were made to understand were able to locate the daughter of deceased also a residence of Hamburg, a letter was sent informing her about the death of her father. A confirmation for the receipt of the letter was sent back - but not signed by the daughter - with no reaction or instruction what to do with the body.

No further relatives were found nor did anybody report Mr. Antwi 'missing'.

Finally the responsible authorities from the department of social welfare, 'Sozialamt' gave orders for his burial. The burial took place at Öjendorf Cemetary in Hamburg, on the 4th July, 2014.

Ghanaians in the Diaspora are advice to stop living in Isolation, be part of the community and socially active. However, the questions many Ghanaians keep asking is why did the cemetery authorities or the social and welfare department not contact the consulate or the Ghana embassy in Berlin.

We are sure the Ghana Embassy in Berlin would investigate further, the life of every Ghanaian Diaspora is important.
