Investigations conducted by ModernGhana has revealed that over 200 workers of Waste Management giant, Zoomlion in Somanya of the Eastern Region are angry as a result of unpaid salaries.

The situation, the workers lamented, had affected their livelihood since most of them are breadwinners of their families and need these monies for survival.

However, these have rendered workers to stop attending to work activities, which has left more garbage being heaped across Somanya and its environs.

Some of the workers, name withheld, told this paper in separate interviews that since they raised the red flag that all they hear from their authorities is that management was still working on the salaries but to no avail.

They, however, noted that they depend on their salaries in settling bills like school fees, utility bills and house keeping monies.

In a sharp contrast, Mr. Christopher Ansah, Supervisor for the National Malaria Control Project in Somanya and also the Municipal Zoomlion Boss for the area, when contacted debunked the allegations saying, the accrued debt owed was not up to seven months as purported by the workers but five months instead.

He also assured that officials are working around the clock to ensure all those debts are paid.

''This is as a result of the problems with the Ghana Youth Employment And Entrepreneurial Development Authority (GYEEDA) and officials are working on it,'' he added.

According to him, the occupants of the market and citizens living around, are to blame for heaped rubbish at the market area that has raised issues as causing sanitation and health problems in the area.

He said he had been a witness to a situation where a resident brought refuse from her home and dumped it on the ground while there sat an empty rubbish bin, adding that, for some time now one of their trucks had been broken down while the other one had an accident and that had caused the delay in attending to the situation.

The Municipal Zoomlion Boss further pleaded with residents to desist from dumping refuse on the ground and use the bins instead as well as those who can use other bins elsewhere should endeavour to do that so as to minimize the pressure on the bin at the market.
