Takoradi, July 24, GNA - Workers in the Sekondi-Takoradi have converged at the Jubilee Park in Takoradi to begin the nationwide demonstration being organized by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Most of the workers wore red attire, red arm bands and were accompanied by brass band music. Over 200 police personnel have been positioned at vantage points of the twin city to maintain law and order.

The workers are expected to demonstrate through the principal streets such as the Asempa Hotel road, the Liberation Road, Abaatan Drug Store, All Needs Supermarket, the frontage of Zenith Bank, the Takoradi Central Market, UBA Bank, Paa Grant Roundabout.

They would end at the Regional Coordinating Council in Sekondi where the leaders would present a petition to the Regional Minister, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo.

The Western Regional Secretary of TUC, Mr. Ellis Ankomah, said the organized labour were demonstrating against the economic hardship, perceived corruption of government officials, hike in prices of petroleum products, increased transport fares, utilities, high inflation and continuous depreciation of the cedi against the major international trading currencies.

He told the demonstrators not to wear any party colours or party paraphernalia and said anyone who contravened the directive would be withdrawn from the demonstration.
