Organised Labour Throws Out Minister's Plea; Confirms Nationwide Demo, Thursday

A few hours after Deputy Interior Minister made an appeal to Organised Labour to rescind a planned nationwide demonstration on Thursday, they have confirmed the protests in a press release, Wednesday.

The release, signed by Kofi Asamoah, Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary, entreated 'all industries and employers and all well-meaning Ghanaians feeling the pinch of the [harsh economic] situation to support and join this clarion call'.

'Indeed this is good for democracy', the release concluded.

The one-day demonstration against what Organised Labour is calling harsh economic conditions in the country, will see shops and businesses closed throughout the day.

The nationwide demonstration will be held simultaneously across the regional capitals, with Greater Accra expected to record the highest turnout of discontented workers from all sectors of the economy.

Early on Deputy Interior Minister, James Agalga, appealled to organizers of  the planned protests to rescind their decision.

He said his hope is that Organised Labour would 'allow good reason to prevail…and act on their good conscience' and put off their intended demonstration.

But Organised Labour says demonstrations will come off, and has asked workers in Greater Accra Region to converge at the Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 6:30am on Thursday July 24, 2014.
