Politics It's time to face reality - Amoako Baah to govt
JUL 10, 2014 LISTEN

The Head of the Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Richard Amoako Baah says Ghanaians don't need a doomsayer to tell them the economy is in crisis.

According to him, it is no longer a secret that all the economic indicators are pointing to the negative due to the “reckless spending” by government.

Prof. Amoako Baah was reacting to a call by Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Ghanaians to eschew pessimism as government works assiduously to redeem its Better Ghana Agenda promise.

Kwakye Ofosu said "...It is our conviction that we can together as a people foster a new conversation about a country away from the doom, gloom, despondency and hopelessness that some seek so strenuously to foist on this nation”.

But speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Prof. Amoako Baah scoffed at government's attempt to 'cover up' the real issues on the ground.

“Everybody knows the situation is bad so it's time for government to face reality; do they think we are mad? he quizzed.

Citing the countless agitation at the Health and Educational sectors over salary arrears, the Political Science lecturer said it is now evident things have grown from bad to worst.

“You [government] can bury your head in the sand and pretend everything is well," he stated.

Prof. Amoako Baah maintained that government has no other option than to go for a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He urged government to quit the “firefighting” tactics of solving problems and find more practical ways to salvage the economy.

“No matter what happens we are going to the IMF. It is time to face reality; President Mahama must for once look Ghanaians in the eyes and tell them to tighten their belt for hard times ahead” he stated. Story by Ghana/Adomonline.com/Adwoa Gyasiwaa
