Hurley holed five birdies and two bogeys as he carded a three-under-par 67 to sit at 12 under at The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia on Saturday.

The overnight leader - yet to finish in the top three in six years on tour - started the day on the front nine, with two birdies and a bogey making up his first four holes.

Hurley added another three birdies at the ninth, 12th and 13th holes to move two strokes clear of Argentine Angel Cabrera, who carded a round of 64.

Cabrera - a two-time major winner - sunk seven birdies as he climbed 11 positions in the leaderboard to outright second at 10 under.

The 2009 Masters champion is a shot ahead of American Kevin Chappell, who slipped one spot to third in the standings.

Chappell went blemish-free on Friday but he was unable to replicate that in his third round, with two bogeys on the back nine forcing him to settle for a 64.

A shot further back is Michael Thompson, who was one of the day's biggest movers following his round of 64.

The American - tied for second at the 2012 US Open - had an eagle and five birdies to improve to eight under alongside six others.

Joining Thompson in a tie for fourth are Cameron Tringale (64), Will Wilcox (65), Joe Durant (66), Colombian Camilo Villegas (67), Steve Stricker (68) and Chris Stroud (70).

Meanwhile, dual Masters champion Bubba Watson is six shots off the pace following his round of 69.

The American is a stroke clear of defending champion Jonas Blixt (68), who is at five under heading into the final round.
