26.06.2014 LISTEN

Two pregnant women died in a horrifying motor accident that occurred at Simpa along the Tarkwa-Takoradi highway in the Western Region.

The deceased have been identified as Victoria Soglo, 35 and Cynthia Okyere, 27.

The only survivor, Madam Justina Essien, 35, sustained injuries and is currently on admission at the Tarkwa Government Hospital. She was said to have been responding to treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have also been deposited at the hospital pending autopsy.

The Tarkwa Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Honu-Broni, confirmed the incident to Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He said on Monday at about 1230 hours, the driver, Theophilus Mensah, 35, was driving a Toyota Rav4 with registration number WR 1973-11 from Takoradi towards Tarkwa.

On reaching Simpa Township, an articulator truck from Tarkwa was overtaking a vehicle towards the Toyota's   direction.

ASP Honu-Broni said in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, Mensah swerved to the other side of the road and crushed the three women who were passing by.

He said they were rushed to the Tarkwa hospital but Victoria died on arrival and Cynthia also passed away around 2200 hours.

The MTTD Commander said when police personnel visited the accident scene, some members of the community had blocked both sides of the road, claiming that they could not afford to lose more lives.

He said the police personnel pleaded with them to remove the barricade for free vehicular movement instead, they allegedly attacked the officers and in the process some got injured.

ASP Honu-Broni appealed to the youth at Simpa to remain calm as his outfit had contacted the highway authority to ensure that speed ramps were erected on the road to prevent further accidents.
