2 Injured In Collapse Building

Fortunately, one of the workers held onto an iron rod until he was rescued by his co-workers.

The injured persons, who were identified as a certain Togo and Mawuko, both Togolese hired by a private developer to construct the stores, were rushed to the Tema General Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that the incident occurred when a wooden scaffold supporting the casting of concrete in the two-storey building collapsed as a result of the massive weight.

Some eyewitnesses said the uncompleted building collapsed at about 4:15pm on Wednesday evening.

Augustine Charles Tamakloe, who works near the site, told DAILY GUIDE that 'the building started collapsing when one of the foremen was directing a labourer, who was pushing wheelbarrow full of fresh concrete, but he didn't notice until another labourer brought a different wheelbarrow with concrete to join them, which increased the weight on the scaffold.

The construction of the building, which started about six months ago, was not permitted by the Engineering Department of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), which pasted a notice to stop work on it.

Interestingly, the notice on the building did not stop the workers from discontinuing the project.

They worked quickly to complete the major part of the building.

When the paper got there, the traumatized workers were also seen dismantling the scaffold and loading the concrete after the accident.

Many people thronged the area to gather additional information.

The paper gathered that the owner of the property did not heed the advice of the Engineering Department of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), which could have prevented the accident.
