Finalists of the African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting (ACCER) Awards 2014 competition would be announced on World Environment Day, June 5 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The climax of the Awards competition will be a Gala Night on June 25, 2014 at the sidelines of the UN Environment Assembly which takes place on June 23-27 in Nairobi.

Samson Ogallah, Program Manager at the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) explained 'the Gala Night will recognize outstanding climate change and environmental journalists across Africa who have scooped various Awards in this vigorous competition.'

The ACCER Awards is an initiative of PACJA to recognize journalists from across Africa that have, through their reporting, contributed to the understanding and conceptualization of climate change and environment as broader issue affecting development efforts.

It also encourages constructive environmental focus in the African media, as key partners in environmental conservation and protection, as well as its impact on public awareness. This second edition has attracted a lot of interest, with over 300 entries received across Africa.

'Arriving at the ultimate winners from three hundred and nine entries is a rigorous journey, from the announcement of the competition, the official launch and public invitation for entries, collection and collation of entries, selection of judges, selection of best stories, announcement of finalist and the winners. Each phase of the journey is very important,' PACJA Secretary General, Mithika Mwenda spoke of the process.

He added that 'as we entered the penultimate stage of the ACCER Awards 2014, PACJA secretariat hand over all the entry items to the panel of judges who determined the recipients of the 2014 Awards in various categories. PACJA is convinced that once again, journalists of impeccable track record simplifying and disseminating climate change and environmental information will get a boost in recognition of their contribution to global call for action on climate change'.
