Teachers honoured for excellence

Thirty teaching and non-teaching staff members selected from the Ejisu/Juabeng Municipality of the Ghana Education Service (GES), have been honoured for their hard work, commitment and dedicated service for improvement of education in the municipal in the 2012/13 academic year.

The theme for the ceremony, which was held at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, was “Achieving Quality Education in Ghana - The Role of Stakeholders”.

Those who came first in the various categories were each presented with a flat screen television set, while those who got the second and third positions were respectively presented with refrigerators, gas burner cooking stove and cylinders, and oven, in addition to certificates.                                                                                                                                                                          

In an address, the Regional Guidance Counselling Co-ordinator of the GES, Mr K. Koranteng,  said the provision of quality education was a shared responsibility of all the stakeholders in the education sector if the total potential, talents, aptitudes, skills and moral values of the child could be fully developed.  

Mr Koranteng, who deputised for the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, said  quality education could successfully be achieved through the combined effort of all the key stakeholders in the educational sector, including the government, parents, traditional rulers, religious bodies, teachers, and opinion leaders.

In his remarks, the Ejisu/Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Kwaku Afrifa Yamoah-Ponko, said education played a crucial role in the development of every nation, stressing that the government was committed to giving education the needed attention to promote that objective.

In her welcome address, a Municipal Director of Education, Madam Gertrude Mensah, expressed her appreciation to the government and the municipal assembly for instituting the annual awards scheme to motivate teachers.    

Mr Samuel Insaidoo of Kyerekrom M/A JHS was adjudged the overall best teacher in the municipality for 2013. 

In another development, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has honoured the Headmaster of the Anglican Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi, Mr Alex Conduah, for being the best SHS head in the region for the 2012/2013 academic year, writes Felix A. Baidoo, Kumasi.

He was presented with a citation and a 32-inch LCD TV set.

The award, which was the first of its kind in the region, was sponsored by Approacher's Ghana Ltd, a book publishing company in the country.

Making the presentation, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Kofi Sarfo-Kantanka, commended Mr Conduah for his outstanding and exemplary leadership in the region, and said that needed to be emulated by other heads of institutions.

The citation commended Mr Conduah for his selflessness and dedication towards the development of education in his school and the nation as a whole.

The regional director also commended Approacher's Ghana Ltd for its support to motivate heads of schools to work hard towards the development of education in the country.

The Akyempemhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, who made the presentation, called for more of such awards to be instituted to motivate teachers and other workers to be more dedicated to improve the standard of education in the country.
