Takoradi, April 23, GNA - The Takoradi Circuit Court B on Wednesday remanded Benjamin Nokwe, a 19-year old galamsey labourer, resident at Akango, for unlawfully causing abortion and defilement.

The accused pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Fuseini Yakubu said about 1900 hours on September 3, last year, the accused gave some medicine to his girlfriend, 14-year old Mavis Eduku, which she swallowed to abort her four-month pregnancy.

He said after giving the drug to Mavis, the accused went into hiding and Mavis began to bleed profusely.

Chief Inspector Yakubu said Mavis reported the incident to Matilda Nkrumah, a prosecution witness, who in turn informed the mother, Agnes Awule another prosecution witness.

He said an official complaint was made to the Salman Police and a Police Medical Report Form was issued to the victim to go to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment.

Chief Inspector Yakubu said the medical report was returned to the Police after a medical doctor had endorsed it.

He said in his caution statement, the accused admitted that the victim was his girlfriend but denied any knowledge of the abortion.

Chief Inspector Yakubu said the accused was, however, charged after further investigations.
