The rich cultural heritage of Gonja Traditional Area was put on display at the 38 th annual national delegates congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association held at Daboya in the North Gonja District of the Northern Region.

The event, which was used to take stock of the association's activities over the years, also afforded the participants the opportunity to reunite with their relations in other parts of the country in order to foster cohesion.

The chief warriors of Buipewura Mahama Abdulai Jinapor II, who represented the Yagbonwura Tuntumba Borisa I at the event, put up splendid cultural performances to the admiration of many in their full war regalia.

Various dance troupes from Gonja chieftaincy lineages also put up spectacular traditional dances to entertain people who had converged on the Daboya town park.

Most participants wore smocks and other Gonja related attire to clearly distinguish them from others, especially non-indigenes who had visited the area for the first time.

Many people, who were not in smocks, also used the materials to design other local clothes to attract the attention of guests who had visited Daboya to partake in the event.

Gonjas hold their culture in high esteem.
It was not surprising that most of the dignitaries on the dais, including the Minister of Lands and Forestry Alhaji Innusah Fusheini wore the Gonja Smock at this year's congress.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Gonjaland Youth Association, Haruna Mahama, the association would encourage its members to inculcate the habit of wearing Gonja attire once a week.

'We need to preserve and improve our culture and tradition,' he remarked.
