Severe rainstorm causes havoc in Daboya

Two Junior High Schools, three primary schools, and five mosques and several homes got their roofs ripped off during the rainstorm, which lasted for about three hours.

Mr Sorku K. Yahoza, District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Gonja, who briefed the media in Daboya after touring some of the affected communities, appealed to NGOs, and philanthropists to come to the aid of the displaced persons with relief items.

He said the destruction was so severe that the District Assembly alone could not salvage the situation, unless it had the support of government through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), to alleviate the plight of the victims.

He said NADMO officials were on the ground to assess the situation, and take stock of the number of houses destroyed, as well as those displaced saying, I am sure the displaced persons would not be less than 2,000 and the affected houses are so many that I cannot predict.

He said the District Assembly had already written officially to the management of NADMO for tents to be immediately erected for some of the displaced persons, and appealed to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to dispatch health workers to the community to avert the outbreak of any diseases.

Many of the displaced persons are currently living with friends and relatives and feeding is now a problem. Those who know how we store food in the north during dry season when there is a disaster, it affects everything, including stored food, he said.

Mr Nelson Abudu, Member of Parliament for the area who jointly toured the place with the DCE, also appealed to donor partners to help with relief items to alleviate the sufferings of the displaced persons.
