Imo Assembly Adjourns Over Nyanya Bomb Blast Victims

Saddened by the unmitigated cases of terror attacks in some parts of the country, especially, the recent bombing of the Nyanya Motor Park, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, in which 75 persons were officially confirmed dead and scores injured, the Imo State House of Assembly, at its sitting on Wednesday, April 16, hurriedly adjourned in honour of the victims of the Boko Haram attacks.

This however, followed a motion of urgent national importance by the member representing Isiala Mbano State Constituency, Hon. Simeon Iwunze.

Hon. Iwunze, had in the motion condemned the gruesome murder of innocent Nigerians who were busy with their means of survival before the blast and described such act by the insurgents as barbaric and act of wickedness.

He prayed the House to prevail on the Imo State Foundation to work in collaboration with the State liaison office in Abuja to ascertain number of Imo indigenes who were involved in the attack.

The emotion-laddered Assembly members while supporting the motion, also took turns to condemn the reported abduction of over 130 school girls who were preparing for the SSCE Examination in the Chibok Area of Borno State.

The lawmakers wondered how the insurgents had a field day unchallenged while perpetrating their dastardly act and called for a closer co-operation between relevant security agencies and the general public to contain the menace.

They called for through investigation to the incidents, while urging the federal government to urgently review its military approach in tackling the activities of the sect.

The Lawmakers also called on the National Assembly to immediately empower the president to enable him effect a total declaration of the state of emergency on the troubled states, pointing out that the time to fight terrorism devoid of sentiments was now.

Ruling on the submissions of his colleagues, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Rt. Hon. Donatus Ozoemena, who presided over the plenary, described the activities of the insurgents against hapless citizens as inhuman and uncalled for, while calling on the security apparatus of the country to live up to the challenge and protect the citizens against these senseless attacks.

The House later observed a minute silence in honour of the victims as advocated by the members, while other business of the day were stood down till the 24th of April when it will reconvene.
