That We May Not Perish
17.04.2014 LISTEN

We are privileged to witness another Easter. Some persons who savoured the occasion with us last year and the years before then are no longer living. They have exhausted their God-ordained time on earth and departed spiritually for the world beyond.

While we render gratitude to our Maker for sparing our lives to witness another Easter, we make haste to remind ourselves about the significance of the occasion, which is often eclipsed by reckless merriment – sometimes even bordering on amorousness.

Although this year's Easter has been heavily overwhelmed by the economic depression teasing the country, it would still be observed, albeit on a low scale and in total contrast to previous ones. That is a reality of the Ghanaian situation.

We are often so carried away by the glee of festivities that the spiritual and the moral lessons these are expected to visit on us are lost completely.

Unless we appreciate the significance of such festivities and conduct ourselves accordingly, we would lose out on the spiritual benefits which go with them.

Easter therefore is not about inordinate indulgence in bodily pleasure and other inclination, but rather – perhaps the most significant – reflecting on the mission of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, his ordeals as he undertook his spiritual mission on earth, his crucifixion and resurrection, especially.

The ultimate sacrifice which Emmanuel, Jesus Christ, had to contend with to save mankind, his flock from spiritual destruction, is a lesson which should instil in us qualities which can change the order of the world.

It is regrettable that at this time, a period preceded by the observation of the Lent, a religious ritual of abstinence, some continue to veer from the path of righteousness unmindful about the negative impact the spiritual aberrations can have on their spiritual development.

The world is today full of iniquities committed by both the government and the governed – the duo almost oblivious of the repercussions of their actions.

No period has ever been so hungry for salvation as now in the contemporary history of man. Fewer and fewer persons are ready to sacrifice as did Jesus Christ so others would be saved. His travails on Calvary hold crucial lessons which will be beneficial to us as we seek to surmount the hurdles of life.

While we wish our numerous and esteemed readers untroubled Easter, we also ask that they reflect upon the significance of the period as this would help reduce the volume of iniquities which is gaining a scary foothold on earth. Have a wonderful and spiritually rewarding Easter, remembering the ordeals of Christ.
