Reflecting on significance of Easter

Reflecting on significance of Easter
17.04.2014 LISTEN

The Christian confraternity ushered in Easter last Sunday with the observance of Palm Sunday to signify the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

Easter, unlike Christmas, has no fixed date, except that it is observed when the vegetation begins to renew its foliage.

The Scriptures have very elaborate provisions on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, explaining that Jesus died to atone for our sins.

The churches will be filled to capacity by many who, since Christmas last year, have never stepped into any chapel.

As usual, our church leaders are reminding us once again to use the occasion to renew our dedication to the service of God and humanity.

This year's Easter is being observed at the time when the country is going through many economic challenges such as load-shedding, the falling value of the cedi, high interest rates and agitation for more wages and salaries.

The country faces other challenges such as the increasing crime rate, unemployment, corruption and prostitution in all parts of the country.

We are challenged in many spheres of human endeavour, but as a country with many Christians, it behoves us to use the period of Easter to seek the renewal of our faith and God's hand in the fixing of the challenges.

That is why some church leaders, in their messages to the people at Easter, have appealed to the citizenry to use the solemnness of the occasion to eschew  all social vices.

Many Ghanaians have a fixation about the effects of religious worship and what it can do to ameliorate the sufferings of the people. However, no one can achieve prosperity without working hard and that is why religious leaders must move away from their focus on prosperity to the real issues that undermine our efforts at eradicating disease, poverty and squalor.

Easter offers an opportunity for the newness of life and hope to start life on a clean slate.

The Daily Graphic appeals to all Ghanaians to renew their faith in the values on which society has anchored its development processes.

For this reason, let the teachings of Jesus Christ rekindle in Christians and non-Christians who believe in the biblical charge to love one's neighbours as oneself the need to do away with acts that undermine our efforts at nation-building.

The Daily Graphic wishes all Ghanaians a Happy Easter and all that go to make a successful celebration this year.
