Security guards at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly are to undergo training in martial arts in a move officials say is to enhance their physical fitness.

The Ghana Armed Forces Northern Command will facilitate the training which will also cover work ethics and personnel discipline.

Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, believes professionally competent personnel would help improve security in the metropolis.

According to him, the assembly receives unending complains of extortion, truancy and unprofessional practices by metro guards.

“Arrangements are almost completed for our metro guards to be trained by the headquarters of the Northern Command. The focus of the training will be on work ethics, first aid, voice procedure, discipline, endurance drills, martial arts namely; unarmed combat, judo, karate and taekwondo.

“The metro guards have therefore begun a medical screening exercise to determine their fitness level before they start the training,” he said.

In the mayor's sectional address to assembly members, he indicated security has been high on his agenda for the metropolis, therefore the need to retrain the personnel.

This, he says is the catalyst in the bid to improve the lives of the people thus must not be compromised.

Kojo Bonsu adds that local economic development can only take place in a secure and safe environment and that a metropolis will thrive if its citizens feel safe and secure.

He believes such an environment is bound to attract the relevant investments thus creating jobs and wealth for the people.

Though, members of the Justice and Security sub-committee of the assembly welcomed the initiative, they fear some guards may lose their jobs.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the committee, Abraham Boadi is worried personnel who might not meet the requirements of the training might go home.
