WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE REGIONAL COMMANDER, ACP ABUNDANT ROBERT AWOLUGUTU ON THE OCCASION OF THE MAIDEN HAPPY HOUR/ WETTING CEREMONY ON THURSDAY 3RD APRIL 2014 AT PRISONS CANTEEN, WA, UWR.

Mr. Chairman, Invited Guests, Fellow Officers, Our friends from the media, Ladies and Gentlemen, it affords me a great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to this maiden occasion. I, first and foremost, wish to express my profound gratitude to God for the gift of life and His sustenance throughout this first quarter. Indeed He has been good to us. May His name be praised.

Robert Service said, “Be master of your petty annoyances and conserve your energies for the big, worthwhile things. It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out – it's the grain of sand in your shoe.”

K.B Asante, a distinguished career diplomat also noted, “To live long healthy lives, stress must be kept to the minimum.”

The work of a prison officer is a very challenging, demanding and stressful one. The demands of the job virtually takes away officers time to the extent that they do not have time for themselves. When people go through stress, the consequences can be unpalatable when not well managed. Stress can lead to illness and death in extreme cases. The“Happy Hour” was instituted as a recreational and entertainment programme for officers to socialize, interact and tap ideas from one another. This will help them get things off their chests and keep stress at a minimum. It is a time for officers to come together to eat, drink, dance and share in order to refresh their bodies and mind- to give meaning to the old adage,” all work without play makes Jack a dull boy.”

Besides, we are using this occasion to celebrate our gallant and hardworking officers who have been promoted to the next higher ranks, thus killing two birds with one stone. Today, we share that joy with our newly promoted officers. Their new ranks will be wetted, signifying God's blessing and wishing them well in their new ranks. May they be reminded that promotion goes with higher responsibilities; their work output should reflect their new ranks.

I wish to thank our invited guests for taking time out of their busy schedules to be present here. I also commend the media for their positive role of informing, entertaining and educating the people of this region and beyond. I once again thank you for your cooperation and partnership to ensure that we brighten the corner where we are.

A special welcome to all of you and enjoy yourselves.
