Statement From National Council Of Ghanaian Unions Of United Kingdom

24.03.2014 LISTEN
By National Council Of Ghanaian Unions Of United Kingdom

Since September 2013, leaders of the Ghana Unions across the UK have been consulting their membership on the formation of an umbrella body called the National Council of Ghanaian Unions UK (N.C.G.U) to coordinate and facilitate joint action for the benefit of the Ghanaian Community in the UK in the spirit of 'One Nation, One Voice'.

As a result of the outcome of the consultation process, the N.C.G.U was formally launched at a meeting of Ghana Union leaders across the UK, on Saturday 1st March 2014 in London. The Council is a non political/non religious body that aims to work closely with the Government of Ghana through contact with the Ghana High Commission for UK and Ireland, and also liaise with Government and statutory agencies in the UK on matters that affect the Ghanaian community in the UK. It is hoped that the N.C.G.U will form partnerships with other key organisations that may help realise its aims.

Following the successful launch of the N.C.G.U, an Interim Committee was set up to steer the affairs of this newly established umbrella body. The Committee was tasked with four core remits:

• Draw up a Development Plan
• Draft a Constitution
• Develop the Structure and Functions of the Council

• Explore funding opportunities
The Interim Committee will report at the next N.C.G.U meeting on 13th September 2014 in Birmingham, Midlands. A formal inauguration date of the Council will be announced soon.
